Natural Stone Entrance Upgrade

The house had real character, but the front steps did not do it justice. The poured concrete had greyed and cracked, a corner had begun to spall, and the smooth surface turned dangerously slick every time it rained or froze. For an entrance that every visitor and every delivery uses daily, it looked tired and felt unsafe underfoot. The owners wanted the welcome to finally match the quality of the home, without tearing out and rebuilding the entire structure from scratch.

Rather than demolish sound structure, we assessed the concrete, confirmed it was still solid, and clad it. Slip-resistant natural stone treads and risers were set over the existing steps and porch on a full mortar bed, with a subtle nosing profile and a textured finish chosen specifically for wet-weather grip. Joints were kept tight and consistent, the stone was sealed, and we framed the whole entrance with clean planting beds so the steps read as a deliberate feature rather than a repair.

The entrance now belongs to the house. The natural stone reads as high-end and hard-wearing, the textured treads hold grip in rain and frost, and the planted frame gives the approach a finished, cared-for feel. Because we clad rather than rebuilt, the work was faster and far less disruptive, and the surface is now effectively maintenance-free.
