Both work well when built on a proper base. Asphalt costs less upfront and installs fast; interlock costs more but offers a premium look and lets individual pavers be lifted and reset. The base and drainage matter more than the surface choice.
Cost and installation
Asphalt is typically the more affordable option and can be installed quickly in warm weather. Interlock is a bigger investment reflecting materials and labour, but it adds strong curb appeal and resale value.
Durability and repairs
Asphalt can crack and needs periodic sealing, but repairs and resurfacing are straightforward. Interlock resists cracking and, when a section shifts, individual pavers can be reset rather than patching the whole surface.
Freeze-thaw in cold climates
This is where installation quality decides everything. A thin or poorly compacted base will heave either surface. We build engineered aggregate bases with drainage so both perform through our winters.
